100 Ideas For A Sustainable Lifestyle

  1. Buy less stuff.
  2. Change incandescent light globes to energy efficient ones.
  3. Visit the library instead of buying books.
  4. Borrow from DVD stores instead of buying DVDs.
  5. Buy in bulk – but not if you end up wasting food – it defeats the whole purpose of being sustainable.
  6. Grow herbs in an egg carton, or another recycled container.
  7. Start a compost bin for kitchen scraps & garden waste (no dairy, meat or fish scraps).
  8. Hand children’s clothes onto family or friends with younger children.
  9. Eat vegetarian – start with one meal per week.  Expand your cooking skills by visiting the library and borrow a vegetarian cookbook – you’ll be surprised at the variety of meals on offer.
  10. Get a Home Sustainability Assessment done ASAP – they are free!  Contact Lee to put you in contact with one of several assessors in our area.
  11. Buy Greenpower – 20%, 50% or 100% - whatever you can manage within your budget.
  12. Install a water-saving showerhead, if you haven’t already done so.
  13. Join a group – sustainability, food growing, permaculture, environmental, renewable energy, Landcare, political – lots to choose from for everyone’s particular interest.
  14. Cut shower time – if you aren’t already having 4 minute (or less) showers.  Buy a timer – there are lots on the market.  Contact Lee if you’re still looking.
  15. Buy organic or local produce.
  16. Just say NO  to plastic bags, and take yor own reusable bags.
  17. Buy from the Op Shop – we have some great op shops here with quality goods at affordable prices.
  18. Start a vegie garden – work out what you like to eat and plant accordingly.  Any surplus can be shared with friends, family, neighbours or swapped at the Produce Swap at the Hills Community Garden at Cockatoo on the first Sat of the month at 11am.
  19. Set your fridge at 3 degrees Celsius & freezer to -15degrees Celsius(any lower and it adds to your energy bill).
  20. Pick up one (1) piece of rubbish a day – if everyone in Australia did this there would be 21 million less pieces of rubbish littering our environment.
  21. Consume less.
  22. Fill the kettle with only enough water needed.
  23. Wash clothes in cold water.
  24. Stop using your clothes drier and use the sun and wind to dry your clothes.
  25. Check out www.LivingGreener.gov.au and take advantage of Government rebates and assistance.
  26. Stop buying bottled water – use a refillable bottle instead.
  27. Install a water tank – for the garden, washing the car, flushing toilets, washing clothes in the laundry, etc.
  28. Just say NO to Post It Notes ( you must have scrap paper at home to use instead).
  29. Join the Emerald Clean Team’s regular clean-ups.
  30. Use rechargeable batteries.
  31. Use cloth nappies.
  32. Buy recycled pencils for the kids.
  33. Take yor printer cartridges in for recycling.  Australia Post is a drop off point for PlanetArk.
  34. Go to a local farmers market, and buy some of the produce while you are there.
  35. Use both sides of a piece of paper – then recycle it.
  36. One for the girls – go make up free at least once a week.
  37. Budget – and live within your means.
  38. Decide what you want before opening the fridge.
  39. Visit a forest.
  40. Read the newspaper on-line.  This just doesn’t save on paper, but on your pocket too.
  41. Purchase FairTrade coffee, chocolate & tea.
  42. If you need a Christmas tree get a living tree.
  43. Forget the Yellow Pages – same info is on-line.
  44. Make sure empty toilet rolls make it out to the recycling bin.
  45. Get a green waste bin and stop burning off.
  46. Cancel magazine subscriptions, particularly if you can get the same magazine at the library.
  47. Use toxic-free paint when painting.
  48. Buy cheese that doesn’t have each slice individually wrapped.
  49. Use both sides of aluminium foil, then put it in the recycling bin.
  50. Use public transport more often.
  51. Donate your old glasses – many optometrists have a Save Old Specs collection program.
  52. Stop using drinking straws.
  53. If you colour your hair, use plant-derived products.
  54. Use bi-carb in the fridge as an odour eliminator.
  55. Use vanilla essence to clean the fridge.
  56. Put a “No Junk Mail” sticker on your letterbox and get catalogues on-line, if you have to.
  57. Support a green business.
  58. Plant a tree – indigenous, fruit or nut are the better options.
  59. Throw away mothballs and use cedar blocks, or make your own lavendar bags.
  60. Turn lights off when not in the room.
  61. Car pool to work and school.
  62. Take off your shoes in the house – it will prolong the life of floor coverings and reduce the amount of dirt and grime that comes inside also.
  63. Stop using bleach – try healthier alternatives.
  64. Give used toys to a good cause.
  65. Buy fresh peanut butter from the health shop – the taste is so much better.
  66. Install solar outdoor lighting.

  68. Do your banking on-line – saves time, saves paper and saves money – and reduces waste by not having to print out those little slips of paper!
  69. Stop using paper serviettes.
  70. Install a solar hot water service.  Or if your house is too shaded, go for a heat pump.
  71. Buy free range eggs and stop the abuse of Battery Hens.
  72. Put on an extra layer of clothing when it is cold instead of turning up the heating.
  73. Switch to GreenGas – paying the bit extra for offsetting is worth it.
  74.  Use the car less.
  75. Buy products with less packaging.  And if the products are good, tell the manufacturer to improve on their packaging situation.
  76. Stop buying CD’s – borrow from the library or download legitimate music onto an iPod, or similar device.
  77. Stop and smell the roses.  At least look around and truly appreciate the area we live in for its natural beauty.
  78. Get to know local shop keepers and traders.  A smile and a chat is invaluable to you both.
  79. Make your own:- bread, preserves, biscuits, sauces, etc.

  83. And if washing up by hand, only fill the sink to a third or half.
  84. Fix a leaky tap.
  85. Seal gaps around external doors and windows.
  86. Switch off appliances at the power point.
  87. Reduce heating thermostat by 2degrees Celsius in winter – optimum temperature is 20degrees Celsius.
  88. Raise cooling thermostat by 2 degrees Celsius in summer – optimum temeprature in 26 degrees Celsius.
  89. Do you really need the second fridge?  If so, switch it off when not in use.
  90. Buying a new fridge?  Choose one with at least 4 stars.
  91. Install pelmets to maximise heat retention on your windows.
  92. Install external awnings on north, west and east windows to reduce heat from direct sunlight by as much as 70%.
  93. Lined curtains, close fitting Holland & Roman blinds are the most effective heat reducing window dressings.
  94. Install aerators on taps.
  95. A single pendant light globe hung centrally is the most energy efficient way to light a room.
